Katherine Kelly Lang on Susan Flannery & John McCook

Weekly: Susan Flannery thinks so highly of you that she praised you during her first Emmy acceptance speech. What was that like for you?
KKL: I was shocked and thrilled. I mean, it was hard for me to believe because I never really heard Susan say anything like that. So I was taken aback. I love her dearly. She is such a strong person, full of life and staying young forever. She is a force to be reckoned with. I watch her every day and I´m amazed by her. She taught me a lot, just working with her, seeing how she works, how she gets the work done. She´s incredible.

Q: What have been your favorite scenes over the years of B&B?
Katherine Kelly Lang: "I do recall some old storylines that Susan and I would have together. It's different now when we have scenes together. It's still good, but they were just so intense. I'm talking years and years ago. I just used to love those scenes we had together. It was more when Brooke was the girl from the other side of the tracks, kind of like what Amber is. I think Brooke and Stephanie had great scenes together. I just recall those, I was just very fond of those scenes. They're still at odds, sometimes they connect and think, "Look we're getting along," but then that never lasts."

“I´ve always loved working with Susan, and I love working with her when she directs because she´s a great actor´s director. She´s always there in the moment, always prepared, and she brings so much out of the other person. She´s just an all-around great lady.”

“I was extremely flattered that Susan would praise me in both her acceptance speech and at the party we had for her on the set afterwards. After all, this is Susan’s well deserved moment. But that’s Susan, so gracious. Although I couldn’t attend the Emmy´s because I had to stay with my kids here back in L.A, I was glued to the TV set when Susan’s moment of triumph aired”.

Q: “What do you enjoy most and who is your favorite co-worker?”
Katherine: “I think acting, which I love to do. I really love working with Susan Flannery and of course Winsor Harmon. We have had some good scenes together.”

“I was excited when the show paired me with John. You get so much from him as an actor. He kept me laughing”.

Q: “If you were ever to appear on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”, who would you choose for your “Phone a friend” lifeline”?
Katherine: “I would choose Susan Flannery to help. Even though we are bitter enemies on screen, we get along quite amicably off camera, and I think Susan’s combination of talent (as both an actress and director) and knowledge makes Susan such a great person to know”.

Q: “I loved the scene where you were introducing "Brooke's Bedroom" to the public and Stephanie attacked you on the bed in front of the press. How many times did you have to do that scene to get it perfect and how did all of you keep straight faces”?
Katherine: “We rehearsed it so many times that we got all of our laughs out at the rehearsal. When we taped it, it only took a few tries”.

Brooke fights back… “I did get a chance to slap Stephanie once. Susan wasn´t exactly looking forward to it, but went along with it. But I might have enjoyed the scene a little too much because my slap was a little hard. Which lead Susan to ask never to have to go through with that again”.

“Since I couldn´t be there for Susan at the Emmys, I made sure to congratulate her later. I was watching it with my 3 year old daughter Zoe, so I put Zoe on the phone when I called Susan. Zoe said ‘congratulations’, which is a big word for her, so it sounded more like ‘conblabrunations’”.

Q: “Brooke and Stephanie really convince people that they hate each other. Is it hard to act that mean towards each other”?
Katherine: “We really like each other in our personal lives, but our characters hate each other. Susan can get scary, so it is easy to fight with her on screen”.

“John really made me feel so comfortable and at ease. I really got into doing the scene and doing the test.”, says Katherine of her first screen test she had for B&B, that was against John McCook.

“I remember a scene where Brooke and Stephanie were fighting. I’m not sure what the fight was about, but it had become very emotional and intense. Susan had to hit me and then I had to hit her. After Susan hit me, I hit her back so hard that she staggered and fell off her feet. The cameras kept going. Everybody loved it because it was really dramatic. But once the scene was over, Susan said, “She will never hit me again – ever!” Brooke and Stephanie have never had a fight like that again.”
