Magecraft is one of the few RPGs made with Game_Maker, and it's also the best. You play the role of a young wizard who works for the Jang Empire, against the Altan Empire. The plot is that your girlfriend is sent on a mission(she's also a wizard) to find and destroy a secret super-weapon that the Altan Empire is building, but she is not heard from for weeks. So you set off to find her, without the consent of your leaders, and the game begins.
Graphics
The detail in the sprites is teriffic, especially the trees, but when they are all put together, it somehow seems a bit odd. In particular are the roads and paths, which are made of 32x32 squares that overlap each other. They could have used some turns or something. But other than that, nothing bad. The particle effects for spells and blood also range from cool, to giving you a feeling of godliness.

Sound/Music
The music wasn't all that great but it was ok, at least it wasn't annoying. The sound effects were odd at times, and some spells didn't have any, and they weren't that special either.

Gameplay
This is where Magecraft shines. The RPG system is one of the best, allowing you to gather the souls of your enemies and use them to increase stats such as max mana, mana regen, spell power, etc. Also, the controls are easy, and enemies are varied and usually smart. Spells are fun to use, but before you get enough to souls to increase your stats, it takes a really long time to cast them. One bug is that summoned creatures will attack enemies off screen, even though enemies will not move when they are off screen.

Story
Plot starts out quite engrossing, but the history of the Jang and Altan Empires, and the world they live in, could have been expanded upon. After the opening cutscene, no more story seems to occur. But at least there is a plot, something motivating you to finish the game.

This is a great action/RPG, and anyone who enjoys playing those shouldn't miss it. If you're looking for fast paced action, or deep, complicated gameplay, look somewhere else.
