My Opinions/Reviews |
1980 TURN UP DOWN - Audio is very good, can hardly tell the difference from a regular album. Not all the mixing seems to be in place, but a darn good never before released album. "Games Up" is wonderful, one of my favorites of all time! 5-7-80 NEWCASTLE - Sound is not great, EC's guitar is quite listenable however. Sounds like this is a small venue, and the band adapts to the location. For 1980, this is not a bad show. The recording seems to run a bit slow. 3-13-81 DANE COUNTY - Pretty sad that this is a famous EC Show. During the show EC collapses from various Alcoholic/Internal injuries and is rushed to the hospital after the show. The tour was cancelled, and this is the last show of the very short 8 date U.S.A. tour. Oddly, I think the music is pretty good considering the circumstances. 6-30-82 SPORTATORIUM - A very rare hard to find 1982 concert. As usual, the sound is very poor. Sounds just like the '78 concerts with a little flare. An AUD3+ rating; one of the lowest I own. 2-22-83 MEADOWLANDS - Lots of hiss-sounds like it's sourced from an Audio cassette. An above average performance features a very up-tempo "Blues Power." Some rowdy fans near the microphone go crazy every now and then- it can be a little annoying. Certainly no better than an AUD4. 3-1-83 LIMITED MONEY & CIGARETTES - Pretty rare bootleg here. The first track is an Interview in which EC comments about the album chronologically with each song to follow. Very nice interview. After the first track is the show, very decent performance. 4-11-83 NEWCASTLE '83 - Sort of what everybody wants to hear - an early 80's performance with fire! This album contains possibly my favorite...(it's very difficult to pick only one!) live Clapton song ever, "Ain't Going Down." Recorded in a small venue, the sound here is very good and authentic - just like you were there. Excellent version of "Double Trouble." I am sure this show will quickly become one of my favorites. This show is a tough find, consider yourself lucky if you own this one. 4-14-83 MASTERFILE #9 - I simply got this album for one song, "Ain't Going Down." This song was rarely performed live and I have no idea for the reason behind that! Simply one of my favorite EC songs of all time and I need to get more performances of this song!! I love it that much! Great show and sound, a SB5+. 7-10-83 COCAINE & ALCOHOLIC - Very good soundboard recording. I don't see anything great from this show, just above average. 11-28-83 DALLAS ARMS - One of the worst audience recordings I own. I don't listen to this one much. A so so album, except for "Rita Mae"-love this one! 12-9-83 MSG - The best "ARMS" show recording I have, audio is really good but with an unususal soundboard. Not all the guitars seems to be in the correct mix all the time, it can be frustrating to listen to. 1-24-84 MILANO - A historical concert if you ask me. Eric's transition into the mid-eighties along with a more aggressive pop/rock style is certainly here - and maybe shown for the first time. What is certainly shown for the first time is the first ever performance of "Same Old Blues". This performance pre-dates the album version by over 1 year. Lots of excitement, lots of energy here- nearly every song is great! Sound quality is above average and very listenable a good AUD 5-, a bit of room echo is the only downfall. Feb. '85 GENERALPROBE '85 - This is the rehearsals for the Behind the Sun tour. The exact date is unknown, but it's most likely near the end of rehearsals. The vocals can be a little tough to listen to, they cut off and distort at the high notes. The rest of the band, and all of the instruments come over quite nice. More of an easy listening CD, but there is certainly nothing wrong with this recording. Most of the time it sounds like an actual show. Very nice spirited rendition of "Behind the Sun." 3-5-85 SAME OLD BLUES POWER - Easily one of my favorites from the '80's. This is a soundboard, but it comes through very natural and you can hear the effects and distortion quite nice. Lots of WAH-WAH guitar, specially on "Same Old Blues." 4-22-85 BALTIMORE BLUES - Sourced from a national radio broadcast. Certainly a good show. "Forever Man and I Shot The Sheriff," Impressed Me. This show incidentally, does not take place in Baltimore. 5-1-85 LIVE NOW - A VHS>CD-R Transfer. Some analog his is here along with very slight missed editing. A worthwile performance no doubt. Lots of songs from here were made into Videos by VH1, so you know the quality must have been good. Stand out songs include, "Cocaine, Layla, Badge/Let It Rain." 5-21-85 MASTERFILE 11A - Good soundboard, just has too many audio difficulties. The last songs on both discs are completely ruined by skipping/clicking. Unknown to me if it's only my copy that does this. 6-25-85 SARATOGA 85 - The show certainly has audio difficulties at times, but it is an average soundboard. This recording features plenty of mic/room echo, and guitar interference. Depending on your ears, you might be able to enjoy this one. 7-5-85 CHICAGO NO BAD BLUES - A much sought after show. Another good soundboard that even I can listen to. There may be a few hisses and cracks, but they certainly are bearable. 10-6-85 BEHIND THE SUN '85 JAPAN TOUR PT.2 - Wonderful rich and accurate sound, certainly worthy of at least an AUD5+. These Japanese performances could very well feature the best playing of the tour. Also of note is a very weak version of "White Room." EC makes up for the bands lackluster performance with a decent solo. 10-9-85 - Behind the Sun 1985 Japan Tour Part 4 - Another super audience recording, a clear winner for me. These Japanese performances are showing me quite often just how much more energetic and in touch the band is. Everybody seems to click on all cylinders. This show is however, a rare find. Recommended. 7-10-86 PROFESSOR BLUES REVIEW - An odd fading after each song. It doesn't really affect the content, but it could be annoying. Audio is very good, but too low. 7-15-86 MASTERFILE - Really great show from '86-a VHS tape is widely available. My favorites include "Holy Mother" and "Layla" - both are spectacular. 11-23-86 BREEZE OF AUGUST - I now have both discs to this classic show! Pretty good sound from a small venue. Greg Phillinganes denotes Clapton as the "Greatest guitar player on the planet." 1-3-87 TAKE A CHANCE - Certainly one of the best concerts I own from the 80's. Sorry to say the sound is only a aud4. As given by the title, "Take A Chance" was performed here - a very, very rare live version to say the least. Seems to be a lot of "Pop" material in this show and it works well. 1-29-87 LIVE IN ROME - Sourced from vinyl LP bootleg. Absolutely blistering, one of the best of the '87 shows. Of special note, EC's vocals on "White Room" and "Hung Up On Your Love" are great, you rarely hear him belt out a song like this - some nice hot solos, too. Interesting keyboard on "Wonderful Tonight" which sets this performance apart from many of the song. Probably the best performance of "Same Old Blues" of the 1987 tour. Pity a complete recording of the show hasn't surfaced. A few instances of technical difficulties with the sound occur, but nothing major. Do not pay attention to the AUD3 rating given by most people, it's a solid AUD4+, maybe slightly better. It's possible this version may have been enhanced and the recording may run slightly fast - you won't notice this change, if indeed it's real. 45 min. CD but very worth it! 4-11-87 SPIDER SHOT - Another excellent soundboard recording! A top performance from the 1987 tour. Lots of great guitar work. "Same Old Blues" and "Sunshine of your love" are noteable. 4-13-87 MASTERFILE #16 - Not gread audio here. This has that no bass, straight from the soundboard which I really hate! This in effect kills the guitar sound. For some strange reason some of my 1987-1989 recordings sound like this. 4-18-87 MINNESOTA NIGHT - Sorry to say that my copy of Disc 1 has major flaws in the last 3 tracks. This happens in trading, so you just have to accept it as part of the business. Too bad, this is a great show with a soundboard I actually like. 4-27-87 MSG - Great Show, not a huge fan of this soundboard. 10-6-87 RONNIE SCOTT'S - Updated copies now have no cracking or skipping - Excellent live sound and a very good performance. Footage was in the BBC documentary of Clapton. 9-7-88 IT'S A GUITAR THING - Good Show, not a fan of this soundboard. Great guitar between Clapton & Knopfler. Knopfler's guitar however sounds horrible with this soundboard-Clapton's sounds better. 9-21-88 MASTERFILE #18 - Low, distant sound.Soundboard is so so. 11-2-88 ON THE CROSSROADS - Show with special guest Elton John for most of the tracks along with sideman Mark Knopfler. Very good soundboard for me, although it's a solid SB4. 1-16-89 ROUGH & READY - Quickly becoming one of the top 10 favorite shows that I have. There are a lot of monster guitar solo's here. Disc 1 contains the major portion of the guitar heroics - "I Shot The Sheriff," is performed in a loud arrogant style-very much appreciated by me. 1-17-89 ROUGH & READY - Wow, what a show - One of my favorites. Clearly and AUD4+, but a standout and aggressive performance. EC and the whole band are in top form. This is also a very tough show to find. 2-3-89 BEETLE CLASHER - Once again, I hate this soundboard! This is the worst for me. Concert is very good, though. 2-3-89 12th NIGHT - Yes, this is the same show, but a much more listenable soundboard for me. 7-6-89 ROOM FULL OF BLUES - This is truly a great show! However, there are instances of skipping at certain points. Also noted are strange volume lowering at random points in the show. These defects are only slightly annoying, the show is awesome! Don't miss this one, forget the defects! |
