Local conservationists will get a chance to take their concerns right to the top prior to the G8 Environment Ministers’ meeting in Banff.
Environment Minister David Anderson, and possibly other G8 Environment Ministers, will meet with invited local, national and international environmentalists in a two-hour, informal closed-door session April 12.
Banff’s Leslie Taylor will facilitate the meeting.
“It is the only direct interface that stakeholders will have with the Minister,’’ said Sheila Risbud, regional senior policy advisor in Environment Canada’s Policy, Planning and Review Departmental Affairs.
“It aims to foster dialogue and to give stakeholders a way to present views to the Minister, but also gives the Minister a chance to respond.’’
The April 12-14 G8 Environment Ministers’ meeting in Banff is the lead in to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, Aug. 26-Sept. 4, 2002.
The 2002 G8 Environment Ministers’ meeting will focus on environment and health, environment and development, and effective national and international environmental governance.
Risbud and Gloria Trimble, the Regional Departmental Affairs Communications Officer, were in Banff Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 18 and 19) to meet with RCMP, the Town of Banff’s G8 Planning Committee and other community organizations.
They plan to circulate a one-page information sheet to Banff residents in the next three weeks to keep them up to date on the Environment Ministers’ meeting.
