Banff National Park officials are suspending a research program after two young grizzlies caught in traps were killed by an older bear.
"This is unusual predatory behaviour," said Parks Canada spokeswoman Marjorie Huculak.
Although grizzlies can act aggressively toward each other, park specialists have never seen an incident like this, she said Wednesday.
Both bears were caught in traps in a remote area. Researchers were capturing and collaring grizzlies as part of an extensive monitoring program.
"The loss of two grizzly bears under such unusual circumstances is sad and regrettable," Huculak said.
The backcountry monitoring and research program is intended to give Parks Canada the best information possible to protect the species.
