Wouldn't this city be a better place if the mayor treated the next civic election like a G-8 summit? He could dish out the same coercive treatment to that rabble of noisy mayoral candidates and shield us all from their pointless, peculiar perspectives. In the last election, clashes over perceived flaws in our system of governance led to futile, unruly debates and raucous rallies. Worse, it left our town littered with trashy signage.
For the next election, why not disallow public rallies, squelch debate and prevent candidates with a different perspective from being heard? Campaigns could be limited to a single, government-controlled venue and conducted under heavy police scrutiny. We would keep those annoying placards out of our tidy parks. If the candidates don't like it, they can drop out of the race or protest in some other town.
