Radical anarchists are vowing to blockade roads leading into Kananaskis, despite the massive military and police presence protecting the G-8 summit.
The "Ewok Council" -- a group of anonymous anarchists from Canada and the United States -- will meet this weekend in Calgary to plot ways to disrupt motorcades of G-8 leaders on major roads leading to the summit site at Kananaskis Village.
"We recommend both moving blockades -- using bikes and running hippies -- and hard blockades, barricades, as well as attempts to use vehicles," says a joint proposal issued on the Ewok Council Web site.
"Just having a single person on Highway 40 (the main road that runs through Kananaskis) is enough for them to be unable to run the motorcades."
Not all Ewoks agree Kananaskis should be a target, however. "Wicket," an anonymous Ewok council member, tells readers of the Web site that most activists feel the protests should be restricted to city sites, far away from Kananaskis.
"Although the bulk of protests against the G-8 summit will occur in cities such as Calgary and Ottawa, a number of Ewoks appear to be clinging to the idea of confronting Darth Bush and the G-8 in Kananaskis," Wicket says.
"Perhaps they are fools? Perhaps they are masochists? Perhaps they can't resist the endless possibilities."
Calgary Police Insp. Al Redford said G-8 security is prepared to deal with all sorts of protest tactics, including roadblocks.
"We get all kinds of chatter before events like this," Redford said. "We are prepared for all eventualities."
