CALGARY - Calgary and Kananaskis Country won't be the only places in southern Alberta buzzing with extra police activity during the G-8 summit this month.
People who live in Banff, Canmore and Cochrane can also expect to see more police officers because of the summit.
No events directly connected with the G-8 summit will actually be taking place in Banff, Canmore or Cochrane. But police say they do expect more people than usual to be in the Bow Valley during the meeting of world leaders.
Most RCMP detachments in the country will lose officers to G-8 duties, but Corp. Jamie Johnston says Canmore, Banff, and Cochrane will actually have more police officers on duty.
"We anticipate with the possibility of more people in the Bow Valley-Kananaskis area, we have planned for an enhanced level of detachment policing so there will be a few more officers and a few more cars visible on the street than what they would normally see."
While officers from police departments in many parts of the country will be on duty in Calgary during the summit, Johnston says communities in the Bow Valley will only see RCMP officers on patrol locally.
The effect of the massive security operation for the G-8 summit is being felt across the country. Johnston says no RCMP officers can take vacation until the summit is over.
