COUTTS - Lineups to enter Canada at the Coutts border crossing are getting longer as security gets tighter for the G-8 summit.

Chad and Cherity Denboer, a couple travelling from Utah, were pulled over for a thorough check. First they spoke to American customs officers doing random export checks.

"They questioned us and then we had to talk to Canadian customs. Then they told me to park over here so they could go through my car and look through everything. Then we had to talk to another lady, get interviewed by her, to find out what we are doing."

Scott McCumber, manager of the Coutts Canada Customs office, says the decision to give a vehicle a more thorough check is made at the discretion of the investigating officer.

"It may be a cursory examination or it could be an indepth examination depending on what the officer feels at the time when the person crosses the border."

McCumber says even with the extra security, wait times for travellers entering the country should not be more than one hour. He says the lineup and security after Sept. 11 was much more strict and travellers waited a lot longer.
