News release issued to Calgary media today by the Canadian Labour Congress.
CALGARY -- Bouyed by the positive and peaceful events that have taken place in Calgary this week in advance of the G8 Summit, labour groups have accepted an invitation to join the Snake March planned for Wednesday morning in downtown Calgary. Union activists of every age and from across the country will be out and about, with union flags and banners, and handing out leaflets in solidarity with snake march organizers.
"It's really just like handing out information to workers at a plant gate in the 1950s as they are on their way to work," says Barb Byers, an Executive Vice President of the Canadian Labour Congress. "We'll be out there, offering information to drivers heading to work tomorrow morning in what really is just a new twist on an old way of letting the public know what we want."
As for the negative hype about the Snake March that has appeared in the media, Byers says Calgarians should relax.
"More commuters will be delayed in traffic this week by the 'official' G8 activities than will be bothered by us tomorrow morning. I invite people to just relax, turn up the radio, roll down the window if offered information, or even give us a honk to show their support."
