Bishop calls U.S. reaction wrong

America's war on terrorism is the wrong reaction to its threat, Calgary Bishop Fred Henry said yesterday.

And Henry said with the G-8 summit next month in Alberta, it's time to push for changes to globalization policies that have business, not human rights, at heart.

"Poor old George Bush is wrong when he says 'you're with us or you're with the terrorists,' " Henry said before giving a speech on the topic as part of a G-8 speakers' series.

"It's the wrong way to phrase it. We want to confront it from a different way."

The way to address the threat of terrorism isn't the war in Afghanistan, but a more humanitarian effort, Henry said.

By promoting development and giving aid to poor countries, other nations can help prevent the volatile situations that lead people into terrorism, he said.

"Really (the war) is short-sighted and it won't work."
