Following a clash between police and protesters at the G-7 finance meeting in Halifax, Mayor Dave Bronconnier has consulted with the mayor of that eastern city in preparation for the upcoming G-8 summit.

Bronconnier made a call to Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly yesterday to learn more about how the city handled the situation.

"What I wanted was to hear about their experience," Bronconnier said.

"I won't go into details, but I will say that I've passed information on to our security people responsible for the G-8."

After chatting with Kelly, Bronconnier said he believes that the city's security plan for the G-8 is responsible.

"My primary objective is the safety of Calgary citizens," he said.

More than 30 people were arrested Saturday when about 500 police officers faced off against 200 demonstrators outside the meeting of finance ministers from the seven most powerful industrial countries in the world.

There were several hours of confrontation between police and protesters throughout downtown Halifax in which officers were sometimes pelted with golf balls, sticks, rocks, bottles and ball bearings.

Officers responded with stun guns and pepper spray pellets.

More than 30 people were injured and a total of four people were charged.

Bronconnier said the "unfortunate event" in Halifax caused him to think more critically about the promises protesters have made to him about the intentions of the family march to take place this Sunday.

"I guess it is up to (the protesters) now," he said, adding that the application for the march said the event is planned to be peaceful.
