Activist preaches safety

Roused from her sleep by police cracking down on protesters in Genoa last year, this experienced activist would soon count her blessings.

"In the building across the street, people were beaten," said Starhawk, the California author and activist who arrived in Calgary earlier this week for another G-8 summit.

"They left teeth on the floor, pools of blood where people were sleeping ... We escaped being beaten be-cause there was a member of Parliament in our building."

Starhawk, who has been an activist since the Vietnam War, is working this week to educate protesters from Calgary and those who've travelled here in the importance of staying out of harm's way.

"I'm training people how to stay calm in the face of violence, particularly police violence, and how to decide what you want to do."

Starhawk said she doesn't expect the same police brutality here as she saw in Genoa.

"The Canadian police aren't the Italian police, they have their own culture," she said.

"But on the other hand, there's been demonstrations in Canada -- like Ottawa -- where police have attacked with tear gas," said Starhawk, who was in Ottawa last November to protest the G-20, World Bank and International Monetary Fund meetings.
