An injured RCMP officer on G-8 duty was rushed from the Kananaskis area yesterday after apparently being struck down by a police vehicle on Hwy. 40.

The hurt officer, as well as the driver of the marked police vehicle -- also a Mountie -- were both taken to hospital with undetermined injuries and were listed in stable condition last night.

"We are investigating a motor-vehicle collision involving a police car and a member," said RCMP Sgt. Wayne Noonan, a G-8 summit security spokesman.

"It is my understanding it was a single- vehicle collision during a G-8 motorcade practice."

The three police vehicle collision occurred during a G-8 dry-run about 8 km south of Hwy. 1 on Hwy. 40, about 4:45 p.m.

Noonan believed, but could not confirm, the officer was hit as he stood on the roadside while conducting checkpoint duties.

One patient was airlifted by STARS to Foothills Hospital and the other driven to hospital by ground ambulance.

Kananaskis RCMP are investigating the incident.

Dozens of police officers have set up temporary quarters in the Kananaskis in preparation for next week's G-8 summit.

The security precautions will include vehicle checks and police escorts for campers and other citizens wishing to use the wilderness area during the two-day conference.

The RCMP entered K-Country on Monday when a convoy of RCMP vans from as far away as Ontario moved in.

At the nearby Nakiska Resort, 260 trailersare sprawled over six parking lots to house police.

The RCMP's role is mainly intelligence and the military's is to conduct surveillance and communications, and to strike in case of a terrorist attack.
