On the eve of the G-8 summit, Mayor Dave Bronconnier is preparing to play host to the world.
And he hopes G-8 delegates, out-of-town security staff, international media and protesters alike all leave with positive memories of Calgary etched in their minds.
"We'll show the good old-fashioned hospitality Calgary is known for," Bronconnier said.
He has met with U.S. delegates who arrived here on Friday, and said they had only positive comments about the city and outlying area so far.
"They're enjoying Calgary, they're excited about the mountains, and they think Calgary is a very clean and very friendly city," he said.
The mayor has a full slate of meetings lined up with international guests this week and looks forward to playing host.
"We'll continue to do what Calgary is known for -- fine hospitality and being a great place for visitors," Bronconnier said.
As for potential disturbance-causing visitors or locals, Bronconnier said he's hopeful they'll keep themselves in check.
"As always, the city is here to support peaceful protest. It's up to the protest groups to act responsibly," he said.
Some activists have been critical of barriers erected around City Hall on Friday, saying it's an over-reaction that sends a negative, militaristic message to those who plan to gather in opposition of the G-8.
But Bronconnier said it's simply a precautionary measure.
"The measures I've seen to date address what Calgarians want to see. They want a plan in place," he said.
