Performers are taking their anti-G-8 message from the streets to the stage in Calgary this week.
Winnipeg rockers Propagandhi will perform at Mac-Ewan Hall tomorrow, while Jello Biafra, former leader of the Dead Kennedys, will give a spoken word performance today at the Warehouse.
The Propagandhi show is a fundraiser for GASCD, Governments Accountable to Society & Citizens = Democracy, an ad hoc legal defence fund that began after the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City last year.
"Whether it's in Calgary, Kananaskis or more likely Ottawa, there are going to be people in need of legal defence," said singer Chris Hannah, noting people are still going through the courts after Quebec City.
Would-be dissenters who hear of others being detained -- and worry about the costs -- could be deterred from speaking their minds, said Hannah.
He describes Propagandhi's hardcore music as "explicitly political," and said it's important people get to hear their messages, especially the young who make up a large portion of their audience.
"Decisions are being made that are going to affect their adult lives," he said.
"People have to let the people making the decisions know they can't do it unilaterally."
Despite being caught in pepper spray while protesting at the Quebec Summit, Hannah said Propagandhi will hit the streets again in Calgary if their schedule allows it.
The Propagandhi show at Mac Hall costs $13, with advance tickets available at Megatunes and Ticketmaster. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Tickets are available only at the door for the Jello Biafra show at the Warehouse.
