The city of Albuquerque has agreed to pay $210,000 to a woman attacked by a police dog, a lawyer representing the woman said.
In exchange, Eddie Mae Patterson, 24, will not pursue a lawsuit against the city or Bernalillo County, her attorney Sam Bregman said.
Assistant City Attorney Kathryn Levy would not discuss the settlement.
On Sept. 5, police were called to a vacant apartment in northeast Albuquerque after a maintenance man noticed a sliding-glass door was broken.
Officer Andrew LeHocky and his partner, an 80-pound police dog, entered the apartment and saw Ms. Patterson lying on the floor.
Officer LeHocky said he warned the woman to show her hands several times. When she didn't, Officer LeHocky released the dog on her, according to police reports.
Mr. Bregman said his client was asleep and unarmed when she was attacked by the dog.
Mr. Bregman also accused police of mistreating Ms. Patterson during an ambulance ride to University of New Mexico Hospital. Once at the hospital, he says, she was ignored by medical personnel. Hospital officials would not comment.
