GRESHAM, Ore. -- A Gresham police dog has been quarantined after biting a 5-year-old girl.
Lex the German shepherd bit his handler's niece on the face, seriously injuring the girl. The child suffered a gash that stretched from her mouth to her ear. She was treated at a hospital and is recovering at home.
It's unclear what caused Lex to lash out, but officials say the attack occurred after the child walked through an opening in the fence at the back of the property where the dog was staying with his handler.
Lex, a three-year veteran of the Gresham Police Department, could be returned to the kennel that trained it at the end of the 10-day quarantine.
