A number of incidents have occurred recently in which a police dog has bitten policemen – even though the dog was brought out to apprehend criminals. The Bermuda Sun understands that the problem lies in one particular dog, a Belgian Malinois, which is used by the police as a patrol and drug dog. The first incident is said to have occurred in December on Court Street outside Tiffany’s 24-7. There was an altercation between police officers and people in the surrounding area and the dog was brought out and let loose. Once the dog was let loose he ran around a police car and bit a police officer who was lying on the ground, unconscious.
The next incident happened at the Rangers Club, where the police were brought in for what was described as a mini-riot. The dog was said to have bitten two officers — one on the calf and one on the lip. The police officer that was bitten on the lip reportedly needed plastic surgery.
Police media relations officer Dwayne Caines said that the incident is an internal matter and is being dealt with accordingly.
