A Yellowknife radio announcer is in an Edmonton hospital after being bitten by the RCMP's controversial new police dog.
According to the RCMP, CJCD radio host Paul McMullen was trying to help apprehend two youths who had fled police on Monday afternoon.
The dog chased the two suspects, and after one of the suspects stopped, the handler called off the dog.
Then, McMullen came running onto the scene. Police say the dog perceived the radio host as a threat to its handler and attacked.
"The police service dog engaged the perceived threat, as a result the Good Samaritan suffered lacerations to his arm and leg," a police news release says. "The dog handler immediately transported the Good Samaritan to the hospital where he underwent treatment for his injuries."
McMullen was flown to Edmonton for treatment of bite wounds.
Lasse, a 5-year-old German shepard, was purchased from a Danish police force and arrived in Yellowknife in the fall.
Since then the dog has been at the centre of controversy.
In December a Yellowknife man says the police dog attacked him, biting his leg and then his arm, after he had surrendered to police. A subsequent investigation by the RCMP handler cleared the dog of any wrong-doing.
The man, Lyle Omilgoituk, has since filed a formal complaint.
