EAST LONDON - A woman caterer was bitten by a police dog at River Park, where a dinner in honour of President Thabo Mbeki was held last night.
Captain Michelle Matroos said the incident occurred before the dinner started, when the dog unit checked the area.
Matroos said caterers were asked to leave the premises so the dog unit could carry out a routine sweep for bombs and suspicious items before the VIPs arrived.
Apparently a women remained in the cordoned-off area, and a police dog bit her on the leg. The woman was rushed to Frere Hospital where she was treated and discharged.
She said the women were screaming and running away in fear after the dog had attacked the woman and a woman who was part of a group outside the cordoned-off area, sprained her ankle after falling onto another woman.
Matroos said neither incident was deliberate. -DDR
