A Fort Wayne police officer was bitten by a police dog Saturday while trying to apprehend a shoplifting suspect, a police report said. Officer Joseph W. Lyon was pursuing a suspect near Reed Road and Lake Avenue about 1 p.m. Saturday after a shoplifting report at the Value City Department Store, 1130 N. Coliseum Blvd., the report said.

A police dog and officer Joel C. Squadrito arrived a short time later to track the suspect, who was in a garage in the 1400 block of Reed Road, the report said.

At the scene, Barrow, the dog, suddenly began chasing Lyon, the report said, though Squadrito recalled the dog, the report said. The dog continued to pursue Lyon and then bit him.

Lyon suffered injuries to his left armpit and upper arm, and was treated at Lutheran Hospital, the report said. The shoplifting suspect was arrested by other officers in the 1500 block of Reed Road.
