A woman remained hospitalized Monday after being attacked by her dog, a former police dog who had to be stabbed repeatedly before letting loose of its owner.
Kathleen Hevia, 50, was walking past her dog, a Belgian Malinois, Sunday morning when it attacked her, biting her ankle.
"The dog got stepped on or something, and the natural reaction was it ended up biting her," said Lt. Trevor Iida of the Salinas Police Department.
Hevia's son, Jon Hevia, tried unsuccessfully to get the dog to release his mother and finally used a knife to stab the dog four times in the chest. The dog was later euthanized.
Iida said the dog's training as a police dog probably had nothing to do with the attack. Authorities said they were not sure what police agency had previously owned the animal.
