Officials not sure what made dog bite Courtney McGarry
An 11-year-old Hazelwood Middle School student was bitten on the face by a police dog at school Monday afternoon.
Following an in-class demonstration on police activities, sixth-grade student Courtney McGarry stopped to pet Condor — a patrol and drug dog handled by New Albany Police Department Patrolman Mike Isom — on her way out of the classroom. But instead of a nuzzle back, McGarry was bitten on the cheek.
“We’re not sure what made the dog spook,” said Dave Rarick, director of communications at New Albany-Floyd County Schools.
McGarry was treated by a Hazelwood school nurse after the bite. Her parents also took the 11-year-old to Floyd Memorial Hospital and, later, to an undisclosed hospital in Louisville to see a plastic surgeon.
“It’s a very unfortunate situation,” Rarick said. “Our concerns are for the girl and her family.
NAPD Chief Merle Harl said that the incident will likely mark Condor’s last visit to the classroom.
“He probably won’t do demos in the future ... he’ll focus on patrol and on drug searches,” Harl said.
Condor has been a member of the NAPD for about six months.
