SANTA ANA – A police dog bit an officer in the calf Thursday during the search for a man suspected of stealing a car.
The Belgian Malinois was helping to search a South Townsend Street apartment complex about noon when the attack occurred.
There were "just so many people moving around during the search that in the confusion, the dog bit him in the calf," Sgt. Lorenzo Carrillo said. "(The officer) is expected to make a full recovery."
Officials determined that the bite was an accident and that the dog can continue to work with officers.
The dog's name and how long it has been with the department wasn't available.
The car-theft suspect was found hiding in an attic and police shot him with pepper- spray balls to get him to surrender, Carrillo said.
