A Dorchester County sheriff's deputy was shot and another was bitten by a police dog late Sunday while responding to a domestic disturbance near Knightsville.
The first officer, whose name was withheld, was taken to Trident Medical Center for treatment of at least one gunshot wound, according to Maj. Mike Turner of the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office. A second deputy was bitten by a police dog while searching for the shooter.
Timmy Phillips, no age available, of 105 Monarch Drive was taken into custody and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill in the shooting, Turner said. Other charges may be filed.
The deputy who was bitten was taken to Summerville Medical Center for treatment, and was expected to be released within hours, Turner said.
The first officer was heading west on Embassy Drive and was about to turn left onto Monarch when he was shot, Turner said. Bullets struck the front windshield of the cruiser. Turner said he wasn't sure where the officer was struck. The deputy returned fire, but the suspect was not hit.
Deputies arrested Phillips after calling his home and telling him to surrender, which he did. Phillips was taken to Dorchester County Detention Center.
Authorities were responding to a domestic call at a home on Monarch Drive where Phillips lives with his wife and four children. Turner had no details about why the call to police was placed, but said he had no indication anyone inside the home was injured.
The deputy who was shot has been with the department for about three years, Turner said.
