Police have opened an inquiry into an incident in which an officer unleashed a dog on a woman at the Nanyuki Police Station.
Laikipia police boss Daniel Musau said investigations were being done to determine who was to be held responsible for the incident in which Mrs Jane Gathoni Kamwaro, a mother of three, was mauled by a police dog at the station on July 28.
Mrs Kamwaro had gone to the police station to report an attack on her by a local businessman.
Mr Musau could not, however, explain why the case had taken so long to investigate. Neither could he say how many people had recorded statements.
Mrs Kamwaro told the Nation she had not been invited to record one while sources indicated no statements had been taken from anybody by yesterday. Police were also yet to issue her with P3 forms though she had medical records from the Nanyuki district hospital confirming dog bite injuries she suffered on her thighs, hands and back.
"I had just alighted from a taxi but before I could step into the report office, a huge dog jumped on me and knocked me down biting my legs, arms and back. When the taxi driver came to my rescue, it turned on him, bit his arms and chased him to the report office where it bit his legs as he clambered up the report desk grilles," she recounted.
Mrs Kamwaro said police had not issued her with a P3 form despite numerous visits to the station.
Last week, a senior police officer ordered the assault charge against the businessman she had gone to report withdrawn from court.
On the withdrawal of the case, Mr Musau said this was done to facilitate further investigations.
"She did not have independent witnesses and her P3 forms did not have the stamp of the Officer Commanding Police Station. I have referred the case to the CID," Mr Musau said.
However, inquiries by the Nation indicated that before a case was taken to court, an officer of the rank of inspector and above drew the charge sheet and cautioned the accused before the case file was presented to the prosecutor.
Mr Musau could not explain how the flaws that allegedly prompted the case withdrawal happened.
Neither were the flaws cited as reasons for the withdrawal in court.
