(WCCO) Minneapolis -- A Minneapolis police dog was taken off the streets after he bit a teenaged boy, police said.

The boy's mother took him to the hospital where the 14-year-old had to get 25 stitches.

Chief William McManus briefed members of the Police Community Relations Council at a special meeting Thursday.

McManus said preliminary information showed there was a call for a prowler and sometime after officers arrived with the K-9, the boy was bitten.

The council was concerned about the use of the K-9, named Helmet, and the fact police did not provide medical treatment to the boy.

Rev. Ian Bethel said, "What we have been assured of is that any wrong doing in this case will have its probably cause in terms of correction."

The community group will meet again with the Chief in 10 days for an update on the case.
