A sixth grader at a New Albany, Indiana middle school is recovering after being bitten by a police dog. Courtney McGarry received 15 stitches after the attack at Hazelwood Elementary School Monday afternoon.

Police say the dog was with officers doing a demonstration in the classroom on how police dogs sniff out drugs. According to school officials, the dog got spooked as the students were leaving.

Courtney's mother says they don't want the dog to be destroyed but want the school to ensure something like this doesn't happen again.

Courtney goes back to the doctor in a week to assess the extent of the damage.
