Questions arise about the treatment of police dogs at the Baltimore City police department. Some controversial training tapes appear to show a police officer abusing a dog in the K-9 Unit. The tapes show a dog being repeatedly lifted in the air by the throat, flipped over, and slammed to the ground. Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA has sent a letter to police commissioner Kevin Clark expressing anger over the treatment of the police dog. PETA also says that the way the dog is treated in the shocking video is not only inhumane, it is illegal. Police say the training methods were tough, but not inhumane. They also argue that the rough handling was an attempt to break the dog of the habit of getting excited every time the police officer drew his gun. Police also say the officer seen in the video has removed himself from the K-9 Unit, and the dog is now living with a private citizen.
