The Miami federal courthouses will be closed the week of Nov. 17 to avoid any possible conflicts with the Free Trade Area of the Americas conference, Chief U.S. District Judge William J. Zloch announced Thursday.

''In the interest of public safety, the Court deems it prudent to close its Miami facilities so that Court staff and the general public need not travel to the areas within designated FTAA security zones,'' Zloch said in a statement.

No criminal or civil trials will be held at the three-building complex bounded by Northeast 3rd and Northeast 5th streets and North Miami and Northeast 1st Avenues, during the week. Routine filings should be sent through the mail or via the court's electronic system.

New arrests and daily magistrate court for Miami and Fort Lauderdale will be relocated to West Palm Beach. Emergency filings or similar matters requiring immediate personal attention should be brought to the Fort Lauderdale courthouse.
