BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) -- Globalization protesters are planning to gather in Brunswick during the G-8 summit in June, but they have yet to get permission to use the stadium they intend to use.

The Group of Eight summit will be held at the exclusive Sea Island resort, and protesters are organizing their dissent in nearby cities including Brunswick and Savannah.

One group, G8 Carnival, plans to gather hundreds or people for a peaceful festival at Glynn County Stadium, according to its Web site.

Use of the facility, which is property of the county school system, hasn't been approved.

"It won't be granted," said Paul McKenzie, assistant director of human resources for the school system.

He asked the group to remove the information about the stadium from its Web site. The site said Friday that permits are still being negotiated and the plans are tentative.

Facilities will likely need to be used by local and federal law enforcement and public safety officials, McKenzie said.

"We've got facilities that are strategically located in almost every part of Glynn County," he said.

County education officials voted Nov. 24 to suspend its current policy of public use of facilities during the month of June.

That will allow public safety officials to have the space they need, and it will shield the school system from claims it's disregarding applicants for political reasons.

"We're not trying to be exclusionary based on some fear of these organizations," McKenzie said. "What we're basically trying to do here is have an authorization process that goes beyond us. ... It's just that we don't understand the breadth of the security issues that are at stake here."

The Group of Eight summit brings together leaders of the United States, Britain, Japan, Germany, Canada, Italy, France and Russia. It will be held June 8-10.

Firefighters have requested the use of school properties as alternative sites for fire stations during the summit, said Lee Stewart, Brunswick's fire chief. No school facilities have officially been assigned to agencies because plans are still tentative.

G8 Carnival also said on its Web site the group is interested in using the Brunswick Exchange Club fairgrounds.

"I doubt very seriously that the group would allow such, just because of the potential damage the could be created," said Brunswick Mayor Brad Brown.
