Pamphlet causes G8 controversy

A pamphlet for families of G8 security officers is coming under fire.

The family reference guide was designed to help relatives cope with the absence of their loved ones during the summit.

But some people think it's a waste of money.

Thousands of copies of the family reference guide are being handed out to relatives of the G8 security team. Officials say the information will help families cope while their loved one's are protecting K-country and the world's leaders.

Calgary police association president Al Koenig says his members don't need the guide. Pointing to last week’s fire, and the world petroleum congress two years ago, he says officers and their families are fully aware that danger and uncertainty and parts of the job.

G-8 activists say the guide is just a big waste of money.

Cpl. Jamie Johnson admits the guide may not be necessary for everyone coming to G8 but for those who do need it the information will be invaluable.

G8 security officials have also set up a family crisis hotline.

Family and friends can use the service to get information about their loved ones and find appropriate help for themselves if they need it.
