HALIFAX -- R-C-M-P and Halifax Police have broken up a protest outside of the conference centre where G-7 finance ministers were meeting.

A riot squad used stun guns and police dogs to clear the street in front of historic Citadel Hill this afternoon.

At least one person was arrested during the demonstration by at least 200 people.

Chanting protesters, many wearing bandanas over their faces, tore down some of the barricades that had been erected outside the World Trade and Convention Centre and started to advance on a line of riot police.

The demonstrators also pepper-sprayed some reporters, threw oranges and other objects at police including some water balloons that were apparently filled with vinegar.

Police fired several volleys of tear gas into the crowd, scattering the protesters.

At least one protester was injured when two officers charged out of the police line.

The demonstrators included anti-globalization protesters, human rights activists and people upset over the Israeli-Palestinian situation.
