Security Area Outlined for Kananaskis Country
The G8 Summit Security Team is committed to communicating on a continuous and timely basis with the communities we serve in order to ensure a better understanding of the potential impact of G8 Summit activities. To this end, details regarding the security area which will be in effect in Kananaskis Country during the G8 Summit have been announced. This information will assist members of the public in making plans for recreational activities in Kananaskis Country during the G8 Summit.
The G8 Summit Security team is implementing these measures to provide a peaceful environment for the G8 Summit and to ensure the safety of participants, residents, visitors, and businesses in Calgary and the Kananaskis area.
A security area, six and a half kilometres in radius, will be established around Kananaskis Village in Kananaskis Country. Entry to this area will be restricted to authorized individuals. Camping and recreational facilities within this area will be closed to the public. A limited number of facilities outside this security area will also be utilized for G8 Summit security purposes. Trails and day use areas not identified will be open to the public.
The security area also extends to portions of Highway #40, between the northern park boundary at Canoe Meadows and the intersection with Highway #742 (Smith-Dorrien / Spray Trail). Vehicles will travel in convoys under escort during the period of June 23rd to June 28th.
While through travel will be facilitated by G8 Summit Security, there may be delays for security requirements depending on the number of people accessing the area. Individuals without a specific reason to be in the area (such as hiking, camping or day use) should avoid travelling along these portions of Highway 40 during this time frame.
All vehicles entering a security area will be subject to a search. G8 Summit Security reserves the right to refuse access to the security area for security reasons. These searches will be a requirement prior to entering the security area. People who choose not to consent to these searches will be refused entry. Unauthorized individuals in the security area will be challenged by security personnel and required to leave the area. Refusal to leave the area will result in the individual being subject to arrest.
The earliest closure of any recreation facility is anticipated to occur on June 17, 2002. Security area access restrictions, including on Highway 40, will be removed early on the morning of Friday, June 28. There may be minor additional delays and specific restrictions in limited areas to allow for the removal of security infrastructure.
These measures are similar to those used at all major events, including traffic controls and identity checks. People living and working in certain areas will be affected by these measures. However, every effort is being made to minimize disruptions.
