Peaceful walk planned for Canmore
    June 21, 2002

Bow Valley residents looking to express their concerns about the staging of the G8 in Kananaskis are invited to take part in a number of local events.

In an effort to put together a gentle way in which to exercise residents' right to protest, a group of locals has put together a family walk for global justice. The walk, which has the blessing of the Canmore RCMP, the G8 security RCMP and the Town of Canmore, begins this Sunday (June 23) at 4 p.m. at the Provincial Building in Canmore. It will proceed down Main Street, turn at the Union Hall and end at Centennial Park somewhere between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. From then until 8 p.m., participants can gather for an informal picnic and get together.

Anyone interested in helping to make signs for the walk are invited to the Ralph Connor Memorial United Church hall from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday (June 22).

Throughout the two days of the G8 Summit, the Ralph Connor Memorial United Church will be open for those who wish to spend time in quiet reflection. The church will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 26 and 27.

Anyone interested in learning more about this group, or about the G8, fair trade or other topics related to global justice, is welcome to join the group at its weekly meetings Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the United Church hall. Or, by calling 678-9665, you can access a recording with details of the times and dates of their meetings in local coffee shops.

A Code of Conduct has been drafted for the event, and demonstrators will be asked to:
    — Accept one another's presence.
    — Be tolerant of points of view that may not be your own.
    — Show respect for one another.
    — Listen cordially to speeches without heckling.
    — Use polite language.
    — Follow the rules of the road.
    — Walk on the sidewalk.
    — Be orderly in your walking.
    — Show respect for property.
    — Pick up after yourself; don't litter!
