Subject: G8 SUMMIT SECURITY -- ACCESS CONTROL AREA TO BE ESTABLISHED IN DOWNTOWN CALGARY
    From: Don Stewart

Following an evaluation of anticipated traffic volumes around the Telus Convention Centre complex during the G8 Summit and in the interests of public safety, G8 Summit Security has announced that an access control area will be in effect around a two-block area of downtown for three days during the Summit.

A low-profile 42-inch fence will be put in place late night June 24th and will be removed on the evening of June 27th. This will allow ease of access for motorcades and media shuttle buses entering and departing the complex, and will have a limited impact on regular traffic flow. The only road closure resulting will be a two-block section of Centre Street South. Additionally, only one lane will be restricted to traffic along both 9th Avenue and 1st Street S.E.

"Establishing this access control area is not meant to restrict the movement of the public who have legitimate business in the area," said Inspector Al Redford of the Calgary Police Service's G8 Public Affairs Communications Team. "Police will be present to provide security and enhance safety."

The decision to implement an access control area was made as a result of an assessment of recent motorcade training exercises and the finalization of schedules of media shuttle buses and international delegations staying at hotels inside the two block area. Establishing the access control area allows security planners to achieve the best balance between ensuring pedestrian safety while minimizing inconvenience to motorists.

"This measure should prove far less disruptive than continually opening and closing the area for public traffic," said Inspector Redford. "We hope this information allows Calgarians time to adjust their driving routes or schedules accordingly."

The Access Control Area affects local roadways as follows:

Centre Street South will be completely closed (all lanes) to traffic between 9th Avenue SW and 7th Avenue SW. Local traffic only (business related) will be permitted on Centre Street between 6th Avenue S.W. and 7th Avenue S.W. The north curb lane of 9th Avenue will be closed between Centre Street South and 1st Street S.E. The west curb lane of 1st Street S.E. will be closed between 9th Avenue S.E. and 7th Avenue S.E.
