OTTAWA (AFP) - The World Trade Organization (WTO) will make a final ruling on anti-dumping duties that the United States has imposed on Canadian softwood lumber exports on August 29, Canada's Department of International Trade said. The WTO had previously been expected to announce its findings Tuesday.
Washington claims -- amid categorical denials from Ottawa -- that Canada's softwood lumber exports, largely used for home construction, are subsidized and cause unfair harm to US industry.
The conflict between the two neighbours, which has existed for the past 20 years, has been re-ignited following the expiry in March 2001 of the first Canadian-US accord on softwood lumber.
That accord placed limits on Canadian softwood lumber exports to the US.
Washington is currently imposing 29 percent duties on the Canadian wood imports.
