MONTREAL -- Anti-globalization activists are threatening to disrupt a meeting of trade ministers from around the world that will be held in Montreal in late July.
International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew will host the the July 28-30 meeting of about 25 ministers from World Trade Organization-member countries. A group of local activists said Friday it is calling for huge protests against the meeting, which will take place at a downtown hotel.
The objective is to disrupt proceedings, said Tamara Herman, a spokeswoman with Bloc the Empire, one of the groups involved in the planning.
Several events are planned, including a teach-in and an anti-capitalist carnival.
More than 500 protesters from Vermont, Ontario and Eastern Canada are expected.
