La police de Montréal a écroué plus de 340 manifestants hier, soit la quasi-totalité des individus qui manifestaient contre l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC), un nombre évalué à environ 400.
C'est l'information qui a été transmise à La Presse par divers groupes de militants, ainsi que par un avocat de l'aide juridique, Me Denis Poitras. Hier soir, la police de Montréal établissait pour sa part le nombre des arrestations à 238.
Certains actes isolés de vandalisme ont été commis par des manifestants en matinée hier. Les vitrines de quatre commerces ont été fracassées et des véhicules garés au centre-ville, dont un camion de RDI, ont été légèrement endommagés.
«Les personnes appréhendées seront accusées d'avoir participé à un attroupement illégal», a expliqué Robert Mansueto, porte-parole de la police de Montréal. Les comparutions doivent débuter dès ce matin.
