The Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Dr. I. I. Gabriel has declared that the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has been unfair to Africa.

The Commissioner said this in a paper presentation at the Federation of West African Integration Conference held Tuesday in Abuja.

He remarked that the rules of globalisation and economic liberalisation did not favour a developing economy like Nigeria, adding that there was no economic protection mechanisation in the system as was found in developed economies.

He regretted that liberalization has contributed to the crumbling of manufacturing companies, thus training the developing markets into dumping grounds for foreign items.

According to him, the trend has led to increase in unemployment rate.

Globilization has not favoured us. International regulatory mechanisms have not favoured us. Young men move about without jobs. This is a serious problem that must be addressed", he queried.

The commissioner added that in Nigeria, the activities of multi-national companies particularly in the Niger Delta region have crippled the whole economic system thereby leading to environmental degradation.

"The land is destroyed; the water is destroyed; no fish; no agriculture and no livelihood", he stressed.

He argued that the economy was controlled by outsiders and that the profits were repatriated by the same multi-nationals.

He therefore tasked government to enhance rapid economic development with vibrant economic policies.
