Local activists pledged yesterday to do whatever it takes to disrupt the World Trade Organization meeting scheduled for Montreal in late July. Student unions, anti-capitalists, and anti-poverty groups - uniting under the banner Popular Mobilization Against the WTO - have been working together since late May, when Internation Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew first hinted at hosting the informal conference of trade ministers from 25 countries. The coalition expects as many as 10,000 people to protest. The coalition claims the WTO widens the gap between rich and poor and fosters discrimination and the destruction of the environment. The activists vowed to use civil disobedience and direct action to stop the meetings.
