WHEN TO USE NO PREPOSITION . . .

We omit the time prepositions AT, IN, and ON when we use LAST, THIS, and NEXT.  Also, we don't use a preposition before YESTERDAY, TODAY, TONIGHT, or TOMORROW.

Examples:  -I met him last Thursday morning.

-We were married last year.

-They came to our house last night.

-I didn't have breakfast this morning.

-We will go to Toronto this weekend.

-I hope it won't rain next week.

-We will begin university next year.

-I studied yesterday, so I'm ready for the test today.

We use no preposition with GIVE, BUY, TELL, and SEND when the sentence construction is:

SUBJECT + VERB + INDIRECT OBJECT (person) + DIRECT OBJECT (thing)

Examples:  -I gave her a diamond ring.

-I bought my mother a new scarf.

-He told me an interesting story.

-He sent his wife some roses.

However, if the sentence construction is

SUBJECT + VERB + DIRECT OBJECT ...

then we must use a preposition before the indirect object.

Examples:  -I gave a diamond ring to her.

-I bought a new scarf for my mother.

-He told an interesting story to me.

-He sent some roses to his wife.
