Time Cannot Erase
A Sonnet

Cloud crested mountains stand their time and bear,
Bleak wind and rain that tear their noble faces,
Fell storms that uproot trees and strip rock bare,
Till stand dull hills in all these vaulted places.
And from the ruins course rivers to the sea.
Dark, woeful waters flood the gentle lands,
Black born from all the tears I’ve shed o’er thee,
Which wash my eyes, my cheeks, my heart, my hands.
As pestilence from flooded lands will grow,
Thus sick I am with love’s unkind embrace.
It tears my soul and lays my spirit low.
Love’s sickness leaves sad scars to mar my face.
And though I’ll wait for time to play its part,
It cannot full erase thee from my heart.
