The following are applications to the Proprietaries (Penn's) for land on the East
side of the Sesquehanna River during 1765 to 1769 from the book "Pennsylvania Land Applications" by Dr. Kenneth D. McCrea, Ph. D. Published by Pennsylvania Chapter Palatines to America P. O. Box 280 Strasburg, Pennsylvania 2002. Applications were introduced in 1765 to prevent the taking of large quanities of land by speculators only to sell at such high prices that would would make it hard for most individuals to obtaining land, and to give those already settled on the land a chance to start the process of gaining title to it. The application was the first step, next was the survey followed by a warrant to accept. Later the return (a written description of the boundries) was sent to the indivudal or the person then in possession of the land and the final step was the patent. (Similar to a deed) |
