What Erik and Erin are doing... | |
November 27th |
We are relaxing in Adelaide, which is nice. The wine tour was a lot of fun. Erin even enjoyed herself, despite not being a wine drinker. We have also been to the Art Gallery, and the Museum. They were both good, and more importantly, free. The other day we ran into Kim, a girl Erin lived with in Lister, on the street. Small world. We went out to the beach, because we heard about a Volleyball tournament. It had teams from all over South Australia, and it runs all week. It sounded pretty cool. When we got there, we found a volleyball tournament... for school kids. Oh well. We are going out to Kangaroo Island on Thursday. When we get back we will get on a train and go to Perth. Very exciting. On the less exciting side of things... I was going to write about this before but I forgot. Last week we spent a whole day at the beach. When we came back, everyone in our room discovered that someone had gone through our stuff. Neither Erin or I had anything stolen, but it is still a terrible feeling. Other people in our room lost money, a camera, and a money belt full of important tax info. I'm a little more paranoid about leaving anything even remotely valuable around the hostel now. When we get our film developed, I will try to post more pictures. In the mean time, here is a picture Erin's mom took before we left. Unfortunately, we didn't take an "after" picture to show the effects of the 52 hour travel time.

November 22nd |
Sorry for the delay in updates. We've been busy traveling. Surfing the web isn't so interesting when you have to pay for it by the hour. We went to the botanical gardens in Melbourne. There were these trees that had thousands of big fruit bats in them. There are roughly 20,000 fruit bats living in this tiny area in the gardens. Very cool. We left Melbourne and took an Oz experience tour up to Adelaide. The great ocean road was very impressive. We spent a couple of days in a small town called Halls Gap, where we were in a very new YHA eco-hostel. It was really nice. We did a lot of hiking in the Granpian mountains. There were some great views. We've seen lots of wildlife as well. Kangaroo's, all sorts of lizards, some spiny porcupine like ant-eater things, and even a Brown snake. One of the stops on the tour involved a hostel that was in an old jail. The place was a dive. It was raining and cold. You had to walk outside through the courtyards to get to the bathrooms, which had no toilet paper. We paid restaurant prices for a meal there, and we were asked to do our own dishes. It wouldn't have been so bad, but it was so over priced. We are now in Adelaide, and having a great time. Yesterday we toured a chocolate factory, which was fun. Tomorrow we a going on a one day wine tour. There is a great beach here. A Dutch girl we met on the tour took a picture of Erin and I because we are so white and pasty. The geocities guest book feature seems to be cutting of the end of some of the messages everyone has left. I guess that you should just keep the messages short. Once again, thank you everyone who has written a message. |
November 10th |
We are currently living in the Hotel Bakpak, which is a bit of a dive. We've been spending a lot of our time with three British guys that are in the same room in the hostel. Erin has been practising saying "Bloody 'ell". We went to the Melbourne zoo, which was pretty cool, even though the animals were all asleep. We've also seen the aquarium, which was good. No sunburns so far. Yesterday we watched the taping of the Australian Who Wants to be a Millionaire. It was fun. There was a group of locals who attend every taping, they were some of the strangest and most ridiculous people I have ever met. Erin has been going crazy because she can't find a regular cup of coffee. Everything is either espresso or cappuccino. Even in the 7-11 on the corner there is a cappuccino machine instead of a coffee pot. McDonalds has McCafe. They call it coffee, but it's not. I laugh. A funny thing happened the other night when we went out for a drink. We spent over an hour wandering around downtown trying to find a pub with no luck. We finally walked past a place where the bouncer told us that for a $7 cover charge we could drink free beer from 11:00 to 12:00. He said that the crowd was a mix of students, backpackers, and all sorts of people. Once inside one of the Brits commented, "There seems to be a lot of blokes in here." Turns out that the place is unofficially a gay bar. At least the beer was cheap. |

Hi everyone. We are still in Melbourne, and have been seeing the sights. The weather was super warm and sunny the first couple of days, but it has been raining lately. It's still nice and warm though. We've seen the Museum, and a lot of the city's downtown area. The current plan is to travel via the Oz Experience to Adelaide, and then take a train out to Perth. Here is a strange picture that Karen took before we left:

November 3rd | Erin has decided she is going to supervise web site updates from now on (I just don't want it to get too geeky - I have a reputation to protect -Erin). Just wanted to let everyone know that we have arived safe and sound in Melbourne. It took 52 hours to get here, but we made it. As normal, everyone in the world seems to want to pick on Erin, she got checked way more thouroughly at every point than I ever did. Thank you everyone who has posted messages. When we have more free time we will send out email. |
October 31th | This is the last update from Edmonton. I thought I would do it now because I'm not sure how frequent the updates will be once we leave the country. It's about 3:00am and I'm not very tired, suprise suprise. I am going to miss everyone so much. Keep in touch with us. |
October 29th | I called Malaysian Airlines to confirm our flight, and I was told we get a complimentary hotel room in Kuala Lumpur. That should make the nine hour stopover much more bearable. |
October 27th | Erin called me a geek for my efforts in making this page. |
October 26th |
Just thought I'd show a current picture of myself and a picture of Erin. If anyone has a more recent picture of Erin e-mail it to me please. If anyone took any pictures at our goodbye party, could you send them to me?

October 25th |
Hello everyone, this is the web page that I quickly threw together for my trip to Australia with Erin. Sorry about the Geocities pop-ups. I actually had a couple of people recommend geocities though, so this is where the page is for now. Erin and I are departing from Edmonton at 12:40pm on Wednesday October 31. We fly Edmonton -> Vancouver -> LA -> Kuala Lumpur -> Melbourne. We arive in Melbourne at 8:00am. I am very excited.

I'll try to keep this web page updated, but I'm not making any promises. I'm probably going to be busy with other things. My HTML skills really suck, and I'm not that interested in learning, so the page is going to look pretty boring. Sorry. I haven't been paying much attention to spelling or grammar either. This web page style is based the work log of Alan Cox, a Linux programmer. I hope he doesn't mind if I use it. |
