JOURNALS OF LORD TERMIT
Preface, Foreword and an Excerpt

Preface

I was more than honored when my friend, Lord Termit, brought the manuscripts of his journal. This journal, which you hold in your hands now, actually summarizes half of my own life as well. It is a story of honour and valor.

When I first met, in that foul duergar dungeon, I saw not only a brash youth with mastery in swordplay but also faith, courage and wisdom. Since then, he has been an invaluable companion and a good leader. Moreover his unparalleled enthusiasm to learn has made him even wiser with the passing years.

Today as I proofread this work, I see his wisdom once more. Obviously we have spent more than a few days trying to remember every detail. I can easily and confidently claim that all you will read is true. (Though there are a few comments I do not completely agree with.)

I am sure that there will be young people who will be inspired and encouraged when they read this journal. But never forget that courage and inspiration have no meaning without strategy, patience and wisdom. Mostly an industrious, hardy work or a well-spoken, gentle word will bring much more benefit than recklessly drawing your sword or wand.

One final thing to my dear friend: Termit, you have done an excellent job. Your mastery with the quill has proven itself to be even higher than the glory of your swift sword. I hopefully wish that we will always be together again and again in the pages to be added to this journal.

Foreword

These pages contain a collection of my memories; this is my story, full of unnatural events. No matter how unbelievable they may seem, every line, each word was lived and felt through by me, by us, by The Circle. And they will be remembered forever by this legacy I wrote.

I tried to simplify this years-long story as much as I could for the sake of commoners that would read it. Appendices are attached either to improve the reader’s understanding or to enhance visualization further. These consist of The Planes (providing general knowledge and principles about the planes of existence of the multiverse), Deities (trying to explain basic beliefs of the religions that are mentioned in the journal), The Timeline (chronological history of The Circle in Dale Reckoning-the calendar that is valid on most of Faerun), Cast (in the order of appearance) and Pictures (of some of the characters that appear in these pages). The titles throughout the journals also have a notation. Smaller titles are for unimportant adventures, whereas the larger titles represent campaigns that are important in the history of The Circle, Faerun, or the multiverse. Title fonts show the setting of the adventures as Forgotten Realms (Toril, mostly the continent named Faerun), Planescape, and other (there is only one and it takes place in a world called Thiman).

I thank my friends who did not let something that would prevent me from compiling this work happen in all these years. I thank Zwi once more for his assistance and guidance to me on completing this saga.

I hope, as you read, you will imagine what I lived, see in your mind what I saw a long time ago and feel what I felt twice, once as I lived through, the second as I wrote. I assure you that you will not regret the time you will spend reading Journals of Lord Termit.

Scalamagdrion

By Khelben’s divinations we had learnt that A× cerks was under a curse of the lich he was fighting, and this curse could be removed by the lich’s amulet.

We passed through Khelben’s gate deep into the hell, lair of the monster Scalamagdrion.

The huge winged reptilian dived right at Formentera and crushed his slender elven body under its weight. Zeus and I could do nothing but to watch in our immaterialized bodies, dying for just one opportunity for a strike. Zwitterion, ceased chanting inside the silencing aura of the creature, had time only to create a pair of demon wings for himself. Prolous was digging into thousands of bones that covered everywhere, the previous victims of Scalamagdrion. A× cerks stood motionless on the top of a bone mound; clothes torn, scars all around him full of blood that was still red but not flowing, right hand raised with fingers spread, mouth open as to say something.

I felt hopelessness slowly conquering my soul each time my blades passed through the scaly body harmlessly. I could almost see Formentera’s agony as he screamed. As the monster snapped for Zwitterion, I could not even distract its attention. What incomprehensible feelings are evoked, as one watch his friends die with hands tied.

I sheathed FlameTongue and held TermiteFang with both hands as Zwitterion unhooked his morning star off his belt. But all was useless. I could not harm the creature, and Zwi was so busy with dodging that he could not strike. Just then I saw Prolous by the corner of my eye, standing over the broken body of the lich, holding the amulet towards the frozen body of A× cerks. As the light of magic shone upon A× cerks, his voice filled the cavern to complete his unfinished spell. Hearing the incantation, Scalamagdrion turned to him, to be stricken by shining bolts of pure magical energy, hurled from the hand of A× cerks. Zwitterion did not miss the opportunity, to dive, right at the monster’s head. To the deadly jaw, he dealt a deadlier blow. I closed my eyes to unleash the fear, hatred, revenge, wrath and Mielikki through TermiteFang, the sword forged by Herfanel for goodness and honor. My eyes were still closed when I felt the warm blood splash at my face. But the monster’s scream was cut short with a cracking sound. Scalamagdrion fell with Zwitterion’s morning star, half of the heavy weapon’s head buried into the skull. A× cerks inspected and cured his bloody body and turned to the gate, without letting Zwi help him.

I believe he had two virtues he would never lose: pride and silence.

With our mission accomplished, we went to see the old elf. By this time he too has completed his side of the agreement. From then on our elf friend was Formentera ALENUATH.
