Biography: Julianna Margulies
JULIANNA MARGULIES: Carol Hathaway

Although she didn't realize it at the time, Julianna Margulies
got some priceless advice from an actor during the filming
of "Out for Justice," starring Steven Seagal. "It was my
first film role and I was so carried away with the attention,"
recalls Margulies. "I was talking with another more
experienced actor and I blurted out that I was never going
to have to be a waitress again. He looked at me and just
said, 'Never say never,' and I never forgot those words -- especially six months later, when I was tending bar in my bow tie and someone recognized me from 'Out for Justice.'"

Margulies' father is an advertising writer, and her mother is a former dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. Born in Spring Valley, N.Y. (just outside of New York City), she is the youngest of three daughters. Almost before Margulies could walk, she and her family were off to Paris, where they lived for two years before relocating to England. When she was five, they returned to Spring Valley, and five years later they moved back to England. At 14, Margulies began high school in New Hampshire. She eventually obtained a B.A. in liberal arts from Sarah Lawrence College, where she appeared on campus in several plays.

An Emmy Award winner in 1995 as Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Margulies also won the Best Supporting Actress Award from Viewers for Quality Television and was a Golden Globe Award nominee for her work on "ER".

Her character, head nurse Carol Hathaway, almost died from an attempted suicide in the series' pilot. About Hathaway, the actress says: "We're both control freaks and perfectionists, which can be a real curse. Carol is someone who does not wear her emotions on her sleeve. She's competent and a go-getter who loves her job. But there's a lot more going on than she can let know."

Margulies enjoys in-line skating, running, reading and attending three or four movies a week. She lives in Santa Monica, Calif., and her birthday is June 8.
