Surviving the Canadian Winter!

a photoessay by Emma Sayler

As you can see from the picture taken from our backyard, it gets a bit cold in Canada.
(That's 14ºF for you Yanks!)
Actually, it's not that bad. Toronto is about the warmest place in Canada and it's been a mild winter.
While such temperatures are routine most winters, -12ºC is about as cold as it's been here this winter.
On quite a few occasions, it's been warmer in Toronto than in Kansas!
But since in most places during most winters it is very cold, Canadians have developed several strategies to cope with these frigid months:

Beer!
At the front lines of the battle against the winter blues is beer.
Many Canadians complain that American beer is too watery and hence opt for the beverage depicted above.
Daddy doesn't drink much beer. He made the six-pack from which this bottle came last over a month!
He thinks beer is surprisingly expensive here and also feels that turning into a raging alcoholic would probably impede his ability to be a good father.

Poutine!
Consisting of french fries, cheese curds, and gravy, poutine rivals asbestos as being the deadliest thing to come from Quebec.
Nevertheless, eating poutine is a great way to warm the tummy and the soul on a chilly day.

Canada's cure for seasonal affective disorder: Hockey!
My Daddy is the worst defensemen in the country, but we should cut him some slack cause it's only been a few months since the first time he laced up some skates.
He'll get better.
