Jamison: There's an extraordinary level of reality to your
portrayal of Maggie on "ER". Playing a character with
manic-depressive illness is hard to do without giving a portrayal that
goes over the top.
Field:
What was most meaningful was spending a day with six patients at UCLA
who have struggled with bipolar illness all their lives. I asked
each of them when was the first time they knew there was something
wrong. On woman in her late 20s told me about her first year in
college when she worked on a committee to welcome new students.
She'd been up a few nights and she literally ended up in the rubber room
of a hospital.
